our story

From Alternative Press to Alternate Reality

Igneus Press began in 1989 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as a daring endeavor to create a publishing house driven by compassion and concern for the human condition. Founded by poet and landscape designer, Peter Kidd, the press emerged from a conversation between writers in a Chevy station wagon and has gone on to publish poetry, translations, and academic journals, as well as books on contemporary art, for over 35 years.

A family business, Igneus was taken over in 2020 by Dr. Sophia Kidd, a classical sinologist and international curator of contemporary art. Sophia continues her father’s mission of tirelessly wrenching the heavens out of the sky and bringing them down to earth. She has also extended the Igneus mission, extending our platform to marginalized voices the world over, as well as to neurodiverse thinkers and feelers at all socio-economic levels. It is still too early to say who or what will inherit the earth, but Igneus will provide a platform for all compassionate voices to be heard, so that readers and lovers of cultural brilliance will be better served as well as inspired to cultivate the light of our humanity.
